Suggestions for Children Participating in the Service

Worship

  • Stand up when the singing starts. Ask your parents to sit near the front so you can see the overhead projector and what's going on up front better.
  • Try to follow along with the words of the songs by reading them from the overhead projector and singing them with everyone else.
  • See how many of the words you can sing in each song. Pick your favorite song and ask your parent to write down the title for you to remember. Ask them about any words that you don't understand.
  • Imagine you are singing directly to God.
  • When there's a fast song, clap your hands or pretend to drum along with the beat. You can move your body too.
  • Try to think about what the songs are saying about God and/or us.
  • Use egg shakers and participate with the worship team.
  • Kids and families can come early to listen to the worship team rehearsal to practice singing the songs.
  • Send requests for particular songs to the worship leader the week before the service.

Prayer

  • Listen to the leader as he or she prays. You can nod your head or say “yes Lord” softly.
  • Ask God your own prayer requests and see how He answers them.
  • Mouth a prayer asking God for the same thing the speaker is asking.

Announcements

  • Listen during the announcement time for any activities you might want to do.
  • Let your parents know which ones you’d like to do.

Communion

  • Listen to what is being said about the last supper Jesus had with his disciples.
  • Think about anything you might have done lately that would make Jesus sad. Ask him to forgive you.
  • Think about how much Jesus loves you and wants to be with you.

Offering

  • Think about giving some of your tithe money to a missionary. Put it in an envelope with his or her name on it.
  • As you put your money in the offering basket, say a prayer to ask God to bless people with the money.

Sermon

  • Bring your Bible to church.
  • Ask a grownup to help you find the Bible verses for the sermon.
  • Draw a picture about the sermon and color it.
  • Bring a doll or action figure and act out the Bible story.
  • Look at a picture book or picture Bible.
  • Count how many times the preacher says a certain word, like "Jeremiah" or "love."
  • Listen for words you don’t know and write them down. Ask your parents what they mean or look them up in a dictionary after church.
  • Listen for the preacher to say a word that starts with the letter A and write it down. Continue all the way through Z (you can skip hard letters like Q and X).
  • Look around you for 15 seconds. Then look down at a piece of paper. Without looking up, write down how many people are wearing a tie, are bald, etc. After the sermon is over, see how many you got right.

Fellowship

  • Try to meet one person after church each week. Learn their name and what they do at church or for their job during the week.
  • Count how many people are wearing a tie or flip-flops.
  • See how many people you can get to smile at you simply by smiling at them.

For Parents

At the entrance you will find a bin with supplies such as egg shakers and coloring pages. Please help yourself to whatever materials you think your children might use during the church service to help them engage. Feel free to bring in any supplies or activities from home.

Please know that we love your children and accept the noises they make as a part of how God created them to be. We are delighted to have them worship with us in the service. At the same time, we understand that sometimes children have bad days like everyone else. Feel free to remove your child from the service if you feel he or she cannot remain there any longer on a given Sunday.
